MicroLED is the next generation of LED display technology. Instead of LEDs in the millimetre range (SMD) or sub-millimetre range (COB), individual LEDs smaller than 100 µm are transferred directly onto the substrate. This enables pixel pitches significantly below 0.5 mm and thus resolutions that were previously only achieved by OLED — combined with the robust properties of inorganic LED technology.
Compared to OLED, MicroLED scores points for brightness (3,000–10,000 nits instead of 600–1,500), service life (no burn-in), and robustness (no organic materials that degrade). Compared to classic LED, it excels in detail resolution, viewing angles, and the possibility of building true large-format TVs (110+ inches) affordably.
Current market reality (2026): MicroLED is available in pitch classes 0.6–1.5 mm (Samsung The Wall, LG Magnit, Sony Crystal LED), but is still in the premium price segment (typically 2–4× COB prices). True sub-0.5 mm pitches are not yet in mass production — mass-transfer processes (placing millions of tiny chips onto a substrate) remain the industrial bottleneck.
Relevant for Lumexo projects today: MicroLED is the right choice if the setup requires a very close viewing distance (< 1 m), 24/7 operation with static content (burn-in risk with OLED), or maximum brightness without reflection issues — for example, for broadcast studios or high-end boardroom installations.
